Ontario Nature, a leading conservation organization, recognized the exceptional contributions to natural habitat protection made by individuals, governments and companies.

The award ceremony was part of Ontario Nature’s 85th anniversary celebration event, which took place the weekend of June 3 at the Evergreen Resort in the South Bruce Peninsula.

Freeman Boyd of Meaford received the Ian Shenstone Fraser Memorial Award for his innovative work which contributed to the maintenance, protection and preservation of the Niagara Escarpment.

Boyd shared his passion for the environment by teaching philosophy of the environment at the University of Guelph for 10 years. As an active member of the community, Boyd played an integral role in starting the Owen Sound Field Naturalist Club and its Young Naturalists Club. His commitment is further demonstrated as he served as coordinator for the Grey Bruce Local Food Project from 2007 to 2012 and previously served as a board member for Ontario Nature.

Boyd continues to coordinate the Owen Sound Christmas Bird Count and acts as a guest for Naturalist clubs throughout Ontario.
