Funky Fungi Foray and Salamander Sleuthing

North Renfrew Times,

Ontario Nature held an event titled “Funky Fungi Foray and Salamander Sleuthing” recently to introduce the Reilly Bird Nature Reserve to the public. Ontario Nature's newest reserve has been named after the man who donated it – Reilly Bird. This 27.5 hectare reserve is located on Meilleurs Road off Highway 17, about 14 km from Deep River. An enthusiastic group of adults and kids discovered a wide variety of mushrooms and other fungi on the forest floor before lunch. In the afternoon, they set out a matrix of salamander habitat boards that will be checked in the spring to establish a census of these furtive animals. A few salamanders were spotted in the process of exploring the woods to the delight of the younger visitors especially, like Xavier Chiasson and Maddox Kennedy. The Nature Reserve is always open for hiking and a trail map is being prepared. It will be posted at the entrance to the reserve and will be available on the Ontario Nature website.
