Member Group Detail

Sault Naturalists' Club of Ontario and Michigan

Town: Sault Ste. Marie

Ontario Nature Region: Northern - West

Naturalists in the Sault region have been deeply involved in a number of efforts to study – and appreciate – the area’s natural attributes. Club members have participated in many investigative efforts to record the natural diversity of the region, including producing breeding bird and plant guides for Lake Superior Provincial Park, compiling data for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas, and participating in planning for a nature education centre on St. Joseph Island.

A two-year survey on great blue herons began in 1990. At the same time, naturalists also began an botany survey for Fort St. Joseph. A request for input into the Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) Wetlands Study started in 1992 and continues. Members are also involved with MNR in the peregrine falcon re-establishment program. The club is committed to the education of its members and runs many popular workshops and outings.
