Toronto Ornithological Club

Town: Toronto

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

The Toronto Ornithological Club (TOC), founded in 1934, is one of Ontario’s oldest naturalist groups. In keeping with our interest in birds, the club organizes roughly a dozen outings for members and other interested individuals to birding areas in and around Toronto. Members also participate in several annual bird counts, including the Lake Ontario Mid-winter Waterfowl Inventory, Spring Warbler Count, Fall Field Day, Greater Toronto Raptor Watch, and Christmas Bird Count. Monthly meetings featuring guest speakers are held from September through June with presentations on topics ranging from bird identification to world travel.

Many other activities are also carried out by club members. The records committee has developed an impressive database of Toronto area bird sightings. The publications committee is responsible for the TOC’s monthly newsletter as well as special publications such as our recent Ashbridge’s Bay book. The members of our conservation committee are actively involved in numerous issues of concern around the greater Toronto Area, including a variety of land-use planning debates.
