Thickson's Woods Land Trust

Town: Whitby

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve consists of Thickson's Woods, a 6.5 hectare remnant of the forest that once blanketed the north shore of Lake Ontario, and a 3.4 hectare meadow north of the woods, which acts as a buffer from encroaching industry and traffic. The Waterfront Trail passes through it.

An island of green in an urban sea, the woods provides a vital resting place for thousands of migrating birds each spring and fall. In the summer of 1983, the developer/owner sold the logging rights and over 60 heritage white pines were harvested. Local naturalists were galvanized into action to save what precious woodland remained, finally incorporating as a group and purchasing the land. Helped by hundreds of caring people, we raised $150,000 and paid off the mortgage. Our wonderful supporters came through again when we purchased the meadow for $531,000 in 2001.

A member of the Ontario Land Trust Alliance, Thickson's Woods Land Trust exists to ensure that this natural treasure is protected in perpetuity. As well as public education projects, the group carries out reforestation efforts to help buffer the woods and the adjacent Corbett Creek Marsh.
