Peterborough Field Naturalists

Town: Peterborough

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

The Peterborough Field Naturalists was established in 1940 by a committed group of local naturalists. Over the years it has provided a wide range of activities to its members and the community to fulfill its motto “To Know, Appreciate, and Conserve Nature in All Its Forms”.

Monthly meetings, regular field trips and a monthly newsletter keep members well-informed about and acquainted with the natural world in the Peterborough area and elsewhere. A Junior Naturalists Program provides age-appropriate education to younger members.

The PFN has published several nature books and guides on the Peterborough and Kawarthas area, the most recent being “Nature in the Kawarthas”, released in 2011.

Our club is involved in the protection of local natural areas through a partnership with the Kawartha Land Trust, maintenance projects at the Miller Creek Conservation Area, and stewardship activities for Harper Park, a municipally-owned wetland in Peterborough. As well, we engage in advocacy to protect local natural areas such as woodlands and wetlands.

The PFN coordinates a local Christmas bird count and a butterfly count, and carries out a monthly sightings compilation.
