Friends of the Osprey-Kawartha Lakes

Town: Bobcaygeon

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

Ospreys nest in a variety of sites including on hydro poles, on television towers, in the tops of trees, on stumps in the water and on platforms built by humans. When local naturalists became concerned that nesting platforms were not being maintained and the birds' breeding success not being monitored, the Friends of the Osprey went into action!

The main objectives of the Friends are to educate the public about the natural history of the osprey; encourage people to protect, maintain, and rehabilitate the birds' breeding and feeding habitat; build repair, and replace nesting structures; monitor nesting activity and band young birds; and provide educational materials, including videos, to schools and youth groups. One long-term project is to raise enough money to put radio collars on a few ospreys in order to monitor their movements using satellite technology.
