Friends of Second Marsh

Town: Oshawa

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

Friends of Second Marsh is a non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote the protection and regeneration of the Second Marsh in Oshawa. Second Marsh, at 123-hectares, is one of the largest wetlands on the north shore of Lake Ontario, providing habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including numerous uncommon species.

The Friends began as an activist organization, the Second Marsh Defense Association, in the 1960s and 1970s when plans were underway to turn the marsh into a harbour. Now that the marsh is protected and owned by the City of Oshawa, the Friends' role has changed and it is now focused on restoring the marsh to a healthy, high-quality wetland habitat and on involving both the local and broader communities in the appreciation of the marsh and the protection and restoration of its watershed.
