Friends of Minesing Wetlands

Town: Angus

Ontario Nature Region: Huronia

Following the designation of the Minesing Swamp as an internationally recognized Ramsar site in 1996, the Friends of Minesing Wetlands (FOMW) was formed. A non-profit volunteer organization, FOMW is dedicated to undertaking projects that can help ensure the conservation of this wetland. In order to protect the ecological integrity of Minesing Swamp and its supporting watershed, programs which further public's awareness, education, understanding and appreciation of Minesing Swamp's natural and human heritage have been developed.

To encourage awareness of this special place, FOMW organizes and promotes events such as fall hikes, cycling tours, winter walks and canoe tours. Projects such as poster maps and participating in seminars are also on our agenda. Additionally, information kiosks, a series of trails, and an accessible viewing platform have been installed in key locations around the swamp to ensure that visitors have the most fulfilling experience possible without impacting the natural integrity of the wetland. FOMW is membership-driven, with funds being generated through membership fees, donations, and grants for special projects. Support of the community, not only through funds by through respect for this special place, is crucial to reaching our objectives.
