Saugeen Nature

Town: Grey-Bruce

Ontario Nature Region: Great Lakes West

Saugeen Nature (SN) is dedicated to the development of appreciation and understanding of all aspects of nature, promoting the wise use of natural resources, and working for the preservation of wild species and natural areas, especially in Bruce and Grey Counties. Meetings with speakers on a wide variety of topics and issues are held on the third Monday of each month (except for July, August and December), at the headquarters of the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA). Field trips with knowledgeable leaders to natural areas in Bruce and Grey and beyond happen at least once per month throughout the year and more frequently in the spring.

A major club initiative is the protection of significant natural areas across southern portions of the two counties. Members are encouraged to act as natural area monitors and offer their services as environmental advisors to municipal clerks and councillors. SN has also carried out three major natural area inventories and members participate in annual Christmas Bird Counts and summer butterfly counts. SN also cooperates with the SVCA by leading nature walks, conducting bird house or bird feeder workshops and preparing displays at SCVA properties and events. The club supports a vital and active Young Naturalist Club for children aged 6 to 13 that meets on one Saturday morning of each month from September to June.
