West Elgin Nature Club

Town: West Lorne

Ontario Nature Region: Carolinian West

We are a small, but very active club covering a large and naturally interesting region. The club organizes several field outings each year, ranging from Point Pelee to the Niagara River and as far as the Frink Outdoor Education Centre near Belleville. We have a canoe trip down the Thames River each summer that ends with a picnic at the Big Bend Conservation Area. We also have our annual Winter Bird Census on December 27.

For a number of years the club has constructed bluebird houses and placed these throughout the local area. We have also constructed wood duck houses, wren houses, bat houses and owl boxes. Past projects have included putting up signs at the lagoon, preserving and maintaining the West Elgin Memorial Forest and planting and encouraging others to plant Carolinian trees. The club has also obtained a lease from CSX Railway for a 3.2 kilometre stretch that includes a wetland and a grassland prairie, known as Dutton Prairie. We have done a burn on the grassland section and our objective is to preserve this valuable area and its many rare species. We encourage our members to bring children and grandchildren to the meetings and outings so that we can increase interest in our environment. We meet on the third Thursday of the month, September through to May - all are welcome.
