Nature London

Town: London

Ontario Nature Region: Carolinian West

Nature London, formerly McIlwraith Field Naturalists, have been actively concerned with nature since 1890. The club offers a program of indoor meetings during the fall, winter and spring that feature presentations on a wide variety of topics relating to natural history and conservation. Birding Wing meetings cater to the particular interests of birders. Field trips provide an opportunity for members to observe local natural history with assistance from experienced members.

Members of Nature London have assisted in compiling bird and butterfly checklists for Middlesex County and have published A Guide to the Natural Areas of London and Vicinity. The club magazine, The Cardinal, is published four times each year. Nature London works to protect threatened natural areas, and takes action on other issues affecting the local environment.

As part of Nature London's commitment to conservation, it owns an 11-hectare nature reserve. Projects such as the Christmas Bird Count, Middlesex butterfly count, Swiftwatch and natural areas inventories encourage the study of local natural history. In January and February each year, Nature London sponsors a series of illustrated talks on nature within London called Nature in the City. The public lectures take place at the Central Library of London Public Library.
