North Durham Nature Club

Town: Uxbridge

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

With its myriad forests, fields and marshes, Durham Region is a wonderful place to view and study wildlife. The seeds for the North Durham Nature Club (NDNC) were sown in 2004 when a group of local birders established the Uxbridge Christmas Bird Count. Recognizing the importance of the area’s natural history and wanting to provide a venue for local people to experience it, the birders joined a group of local nature enthusiasts and in September 2013, the NDNC was born.

Building on work that has been conducted in the area by professional and citizen scientists over the years, the group has planned an aggressive program to better document and protect the area’s wildlife, and introduce it to local residents. They plan to host a minimum of 4 outdoor and 4 indoor events each year, utilizing the expertise of local naturalists who have a wealth of nature knowledge to share. The NDNC executive is also developing a suite of events that are solely child-focused. The future of Ontario’s species and habitats rests with young people and the group believes that children must develop an early interest in nature to ensure that it will be protected for generations to come.
