The Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Essex County Field Naturalists' Club have worked together the acquire and protect a 24-hectare property on Pelee Island as a nature reserve. This property is part of a natural area known as the Stone Road Alvar Complex, which is noted for its diversity of plant and animal species as well as a number of provincially and nationally rare plant and animal species.
