Environment Hamilton

Town: Hamilton

Ontario Nature Region: Carolinian East

Environment Hamilton, founded in 2001, is an incorporated, non-profit volunteer group that was formed out of the efforts of a small group of citizens from east Hamilton who launched an investigation to see the City of Hamilton's old Rennie Street Landfill properly remediated. The fine charged to the city came back to the citizens via a fine-sharing provision in the federal Fisheries Act. Some of this money is now being used for a variety of new community initiatives, including the creation of Environment Hamilton.

The group's mandate is to improve the capacity of community organizations and individuals to respond to the environmental challenges facing Hamilton.

Environment Hamilton's recent successes include:

  • Trees Count - neighbourhood tree inventory based on the Neighbourwoods program
  • Stack Watch air quality monitoring
  • People Powered Planning engagement of citizens in planning our city
  • Student Stream Stewards engagement of high school students in monitoring water quality of our local streams and reporting results to the community
  • Transit Neighbourhoods for Hamilton improving public transit
