Friends of the Coves Subwatershed Inc.

Town: London

Ontario Nature Region: Carolinian West

The Friends of the Coves Subwatershed, founded in 1999, is an incorporated, non-profit volunteer group with charitable status that undertakes projects to improve the ecological health of the Coves Subwatershed. The Coves Subwatershed is named for a series of ponds and ravines located in the heart of London. The subwatershed includes the lands that drain into the Coves.

The Coves have long been used by the community for recreation and as a nature sanctuary. Over time, industrial contamination, inappropriate land use practices and storm sewer outflows have contributed to sediment build-up, erosion and the degradation of these ponds. The Friends of the Coves is working to improve and protect the long-term health of this area.

The group's mandate is to:

  • develop and implement effective protection, rehabilitation and stewardship of the Coves Subwatershed a unique bio-regional feature of the City of London; and,
  • educate the community on established scientific principals of ecosystem protection.

The Friends of the Coves Subwatershed's recent successes include the completion and release of the Coves Subwatershed Plan which is being considered for adoption as a Guideline Document under the City of London's Official Plan. They have also created a fully equipped office with two full-time employees.
