Toronto Bird Observatory

Town: Toronto

Ontario Nature Region: Lake Ontario North

Toronto Bird Observatory (TBO) is a charitable organization which provides a means for naturalists to study and contribute to the knowledge of avian biology and behaviour through banding and other means of monitoring migratory birds.

Programs are carried out entirely on a voluntary basis by the membership, under a Master Banding Permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service. During spring and fall migration, TBO members band and count (census) songbirds during weekends and throughout the week. Other projects that TBO is involved in include:

  • Fall banding of owls at Port Hope and Warsaw
  • Winter banding of passerines at Port Hope
  • Tree Swallow and Eastern Blue Bird nest box projects in Durham Region and Northumberland County
  • Spring and fall banding of birds with the Fatal Light Awareness Program in downtown Toronto

TBO is proud of having gathered scientific data and contributed to bird conservation since 1978. TBO was the first urban-based bird observatory in North America and is a member of Ontario Bird Banding Association.
