Field Botanists of Ontario

Town: Ontario

Ontario Nature Region: Provincial Partner

The Field Botanists of Ontario (FBO) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1983 for those interested in botany and conservation in the Province of Ontario. The FBO's membership consists of approximately 250 people, ranging from amateur to professional botanists of all ages and levels of expertise. Our main objectives are:

  • to provide opportunities for people to meet and pursue their interests in field botany;
  • to provide education in field botany;
  • to encourage the exchange of botanical information;
  • to increase knowledge and documentation of the flora of Ontario; and
  • to provide botanical expertise to the naturalist community.

The FBO's primary activity is holding field trips. About 12 are held each year from spring through fall. Our trips are varied, covering the province from Ottawa to Hamilton and north to the Kawarthas and Manitoulin Island. We also hold workshops, which have typically specialized in the identification of difficult groups of plants.

We publish a quarterly newsletter, which is packed full of interesting and current botanical tidbits, including news items, reviews of recently published books and letters. It is also the showcase for field trip reports which are written by members after every trip.

Our Annual General Meeting takes place in early autumn each year, as part of a weekend of activities including field trips, workshops, lectures and slide shows.
