Norfolk Field Naturalists

Town: Simcoe

Ontario Nature Region: Carolinian East

We are a community based, non-profit organization with a small but dedicated membership that works within the Region of Haldimand-Norfolk to raise the level of environmental concern and protection. In addition to general meetings, the NFN runs over 30 field trips each year. The club reviews severance applications, has been an active participant in the development of Regional and Local Official Plans, was very involved in the implementation of the local “blue box” program, completed “The Natural Areas Inventory of Haldimand-Norfolk”, has designed, funded and implemented a Large Snake Survey, A Great Tree Hunt, Roadside Amphibian Counts, produced an Ontario Snakes Poster and printed a tabloid celebrating our natural features.

With support from Lake Erie Steel Co., the NFN has produced a 20-minute video celebrating some of the natural wonders of Haldimand-Norfolk as well as operating a booth at the annual Norfolk County Fair. The club manages a nature reserve, “Rowanwood”, which it helped the Ontario Heritage Foundation purchase, and has provided funding to the Nature Conservancy of Canada for land purchases in the area. The NFN works with the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, Bird Studies Canada, the Long Point Basin Land Trust and many other organizations to help preserve some of the best pieces of Carolinian Canada remaining in southern Ontario.
