LOON CALL HAS LAUNCHED

This newsletter is for you – we want to keep you up to date on all the important and fun things going on at Ontario Nature.  When you join our community we want you to feel like a proud member and be inspired to share your love of nature with friends and family. The more people that get involved, the stronger our voice for conservation will be! No launch is complete without a contest. Learn how you can enter and win some wild prizes.

DEMANDING JUSTICE FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES

Our government gutted legislation that protects at-risk species. This is unacceptable, so we’re taking them to court. We cannot continue to degrade and destroy the intricate web of life upon which we all depend. We fought hard to ensure a gold standard Endangered Species Act was enacted in 2007. Today, we need your voice to save Ontario's wild because our government has weakened this legislation.

A WIN FOR FOREST & FRESHWATER FOODS

Ontario has become the first province in Canada to have a local food act, and thanks to the boreal staff at Ontario Nature and partners, "forest and freshwater foods" have been included in the Act! Forest and freshwater foods rarely garner the same attention as agriculture in local food discussions. The Act provides for an increased recognition of the importance of wildlife habitat and clean water in our food system. It is expected to be proclaimed in spring 2014.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

Each year this tradition becomes stronger as hundreds of bird lovers gather to participate in local bird counts held across Ontario. Join the hordes of scientists and naturalists in a 24-hour marathon count of as many bird species you can find in your area. Close to 50 of our clubs organize counts in their jurisdictions. Dig out your warm coats and binoculars and get ready for this birding extravaganza in December!
