Biodiversity of Forest Life Feature of Field Naturalists Meeting

Is it possible to harvest Ontario's forest resources to sustain economic and social development while, at the same time conserving this biological legacy? Or, is this a fools errand? Can we have our cake and eat it too? Can our songbirds survive forestry practices? These pressing and often perplexing questions will be addressed by noted forestry expert Brian Naylor at the November meeting of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MVFN).

Dr. Brian Naylor, who is with the Ministry of Natural Resources North Bay office in the Southern Science and Information Section, is a highly published author on forest biodiversity. His areas of expertise include wildlife and habitat ecology related to life in the forest. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the J.R.Dymond Public Service Award from the Federation of Ontario Naturalists.

The focus of Dr. Naylor’s work is the development and transference of science and technology that integrates wildlife habitat and biodiversity concerns into the planning and implementation of forest management practices. Dr. Naylor will speak on the impact of forest management on a variety of forest species including deer, moose, bird life and amphibians. His research has helped provide a scientific basis for many of the guidelines used today by forest managers in Central Ontario.

This MVFN meeting, the third session on the theme of Biodiversity, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Almonte United Church, Elgin Street, starting at 7:30 P.M. All members of the public are invited to attend. A charge of $5 for non MVFN members will be levied and refreshments will be offered.

For further information on this meeting, contact MVFN Programme Chair Tine Kuiper, 256-8241 or, check out the MVFN website at mvfn.ca.
