ON NATURE Summer 2008Coming soon:The Spectacular Lake Superior Coastline: Woodland caribou, peregrine falcons and towering 300-metre cliffs are the highlights of Canada’s first National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) in western Lake Superior, a designation worth celebrating. But will the NMCA label be enough to protect a coastline that contains prime mineral and aggregate potential and is a valuable source of fresh water from outside interests? Another Expressway: Despite painting itself green, the provincial government plans to build yet another major roadway in southern Ontario that would cut through prime farm land, the Niagara Escarpment and the fragile Carolinian Zone. Now a coalition of environmental groups, members of the farming community and concerned citizens are trying to save this fragmented landscape. The Dark Side of Light Pollution: Unshielded, misdirected and overpowered lights together produce light pollution that adversely affects birds, animals and even plants by disrupting blooming times. But individuals and governments can do something about light pollution, and the solutions would yield greater energy efficiency, the safeguarding of our wildlife and a return to stargazing. Plus:
