| Writers’ Guidelines
Content: We publish feature articles on all aspects of natural history, conservation and the environment in Ontario - stories about plants and animals, wildlife research, parks and wilderness areas, and environmental issues. ON Nature also runs profiles of Ontario people who are involved in some aspect of conservation or environmental work. “Being There” runs first-person accounts of soft wilderness adventures in Ontario (canoeing, hiking, back-country skiing, birding trips). These articles must be about a destination in Ontario. “Urban Nature” runs articles on environmental/conservation concerns unique to urban areas. Last Word” runs short, one-page opinion pieces.
We rarely accept articles with a national or an international scope. We do not publish poetry or fiction.
Rights: First Canadian serial rights
Focus & Style: We’re looking for tightly focused articles that offer an interesting theme and a fresh outlook. Stories should contain in-depth information presented in a lively and accessible style.
Sample Copy: Please be familiar with the magazine before submitting ideas. To obtain a sample copy send a cheque or money order for $9.49 to Ontario Nature, with your request for a back issue. This price includes cost of the magazine, postage and handling and taxes. Payable to Ontario Nature.
Length: Features run 1,000-2,500 words. “Urban Nature” is 1000 words. Last Word” is 600-700 words.
Payment: Our rates compare to trade magazines. Payment is 30-days after acceptance.

Photographer's Guidelines
What we publish: A full range of articles about wildlife, parks, wilderness areas, environment issues, and nature-related activities. Most of our articles are purchased from freelance writers and are illustrated from freelance photographers' stock. For the most part, photos only of Ontario species and locations are relevant.
- We use 35mm and 2" colour transparencies, as well as black and white prints.
- We also use digital images submitted in a jpeg format to victoriaf@ontarionature.org. For reproduction purposes, digital images should be a high resolution (600dpi).
- We will not knowingly publish any photo obtained by the harassment of wildlife or by the destructive grooming or pruning of habitat.
To Obtain a Sample Copy: Send a cheque or money order for $9.49 to Ontario Nature with your request for a back issue. This price includes cost of the magazine, postage and handling and taxes.
How to Submit: Please submit a selection of your work. Include a stock list if you have one. Send your submission to Victoria Foote at Ontario Nature. Include a SASE; if you require return by registered mail, include sufficient postage. Submit slides in plastic slide sheets, protected by cardboard. Label all photos with your name and the subject matter. In looking over submissions, we note a photographer’s strengths, as well as images that we might be able to use in the future. While every reasonable care is taken, we cannot be held responsible for loss of, or damage to, unsolicited material.
Payment: Rates are $50 for up to a half page, $80 for a half to full page, $125 for a spread, and $150 for a cover. Black and white photos are $40. Payment is made on publication. A small version of a photo may be used on the Ontario Nature website in the ON Nature section for the specific issue. An additional amount of $25 would be paid for photos smaller than 250 pixels in any direction, and $50 would be paid for photos up to 500 pixels in any direction. The photos will be reproduced in a low resolution (72 dpi) making it difficult for anyone to re-use them.
