Results from Ontario's Breeding Bird Atlas

Distribution maps for each species that breeds in Ontario can be obtained directly from the atlas web site. Click here to access these maps.

Breeding Bird Survey resutls, early Atlas results and independent research have indicated that populations of various grassland species are in decline. This trend is particularly apparent for the Upland Sandpiper, which has to date been found in only 52% of the number of squares that it was recorded in during the first atlas. The Atlas is revealing the spatial pattern of the declines that will be invaluable in helping understand their cause.

The distribution of the sandhill crane has increased dramatically over the past twenty years. The species was recorded in 210 squares in the first atlas, and has already been recorded in 628 squares to date during the current atlas.
