Provincial Partners: Conservation Ontario January 1, 2012-February 23, 2012
ROM Northern Owl Exhibit
10:00 am-4:00 pm
Conservation Halton
The Mountsberg Raptor Centre is thrilled to host the Royal Ontario Museum’s spectacular Northern Owls exhibit from January 1 through to February 23, 2012. This educational and beautiful display will teach park visitors all about Ontario’s diverse owl species, some of which are live residents of our educational centre for non-releasable birds of prey.
The Northern Owls Exhibit will be open at the Mountsberg Raptor Centre for self-guided exploration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. It will also be a featured part of the popular evening Owl Prowl programs which are available for both families (January 14 and 28) and nature-minded adults (January 13 and 27).
During special weekends in January and February, Raptor Centre staff will be available from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. to guide park visitors through the exhibit at no extra charge, and allow them an up-close and ‘nose-to-beak’ visit with one of Mountsberg’s live owl residents.
Don’t miss this fascinating and educational family experience, free with gate admission on the following weekends: January 7 and 8, January 21 and 22, February 4 and 5, February 11 and 12 as well as February 18 and 19. Conservation Halton Annual Passholders only need to show their pass for park admission.

WEST LAKESHORE BIRDING
Lake Ontario North: Pickering Naturalists - Pickering Leader: Steve LaForest/Janice Melendez
Plan to meet at 8:30am on the southwest corner of the Pickering GO Station parking lot
(Bayly and Liverpool). We will carpool and drive to the Bronte Harbour at the foot of Bronte
Road in Oakville.
Birding the west end of Lake Ontario is unique for the large rafts of ducks found there.
We are certain to see a number of species. This is a great outing for both experienced and
beginner birders. The variety and possible great sightings like Eiders or all three Scoters
will appeal to the experienced birder. The ease of identification and relative closeness of
some of the species will appeal to the beginner.
We will explore from the Bronte area over through Burlington, Windermere Basin and even
as far as Grimsby if the conditions and interest warrant. Remember to dress warmly – the
lakeshore area can be windy and cold. We will stop at a local restaurant (Hutch's) for lunch
but you can bring your own if you prefer. Please contact John (Outings coordinator) if you
are coming. (outings at pickeringnaturalists.org)

Get the inside goods from those closely associated with the process and have your questions answered.
In addition, hear about ongoing TRCA (Toronto Region Conservation Authority) projects. As the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail passes through many of their tracts, ORTA works closely with TRCA to develop trails and ensure good stewardship. Thus we will be interested to hear of new developments.

City Bird, Country Bird: Mechanisms of Response to Urbanization
Ontario East: Kingston Field Naturalists - Kingston Speaker: Fran Bonier
Fran is a NSERC Banting Postdoctoral Fellow with the Queen's University Biology Department, working with Professor Bob Montgomerie. She completed her MSc in Zoology at the University of Idaho, and her PhD in Zoology at the University of Washington in Seattle under the supervision of the founder of field endocrinology, John Wingfield. Fran's research interests revolve around questions of how organisms cope with challenges in their environment. She looks at both short-term responses to challenges, in terms of behavior, physiology, and life history, and also longer term demographic and evolutionary responses. She takes a diversity of approaches to addressing research questions, drawing on a wide array of tools from numerous disciplines including endocrinology, population genetics, hematology, behavioral ecology, and field biology. Her current research has two main foci: the hormonal mechanisms underlying life history allocation and the influence of the challenge of urbanization on the physiology, ecology, and behavior. Most of her research relies on field and comparative studies of birds.
More than half of the globe's human population now lives in urban areas, with a projected 70% of the human population of 9 billion expected to live in cities by 2050. Urbanization presents a challenge to many organisms and uniformly reduces biodiversity. Although most species do not persist in urban habitat, some not only persist, but appear to thrive in cities. How are species that thrive in urban centers different from those that do not? In our recent work, we find both population- and species-level differences related to ecology, physiology, and behaviour, suggesting that city birds differ from their country cousins in several important ways. These differences help explain the loss of diversity in cities and give insight into mechanisms for increasing biodiversity through careful planning and management of our urban centers.

GREAT BACK YARD BIRD COUNT, FEBRUARY 17 – 20, 2012
Provincial Partners: Bird Studies Canada - Long Point GREAT BACK YARD BIRD COUNT, FEBRUARY 17 – 20, 2012
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds. This is a great example of citizen science at its best as over 90,000 check lists were submitted in 2011 that included 594 bird species. While it is called the Great “Backyard” Bird Count, it can be done anywhere such as your local park or green space so if few birds visit your yard you can go and find them elsewhere.

Bokashi or EM (Effective Microorganisms Technology)
Lake Ontario North: Mycological Society of Toronto - Toronto Monday, February 27, 2012 7:45 p.m.
Speaker: VERA DEL VECCHIO, MST Member, President of Healthy Earth
Presentation: "Bokashi or EM (Effective Microorganisms Technology)"
Description: Vera has had a long standing interest in bringing composting techniques to an urban environment. The more she researched about EM and Bokashi, the more amazed she became. The composting method is 10 times faster than regular composting, degrading in seven days with little effort. It is clean and does not attract insects, nor animals, and rotting garbage is eliminated. It can be used on a large commercial scale or small, perfect for owners urban backyards, apartments or condos, providing sweet organic soil for indoor and outdoor plants too! It currently is being used around the world in 130 countries. The method eliminates the use of pesticides, hormones, and fertilizers with healthier and larger yields of produce. Results are substantial at reduced costs.
MST meetings are held in the Auditorium of the Toronto Botanical Garden (formerly the Civic Garden Centre), located at the southwest corner of Leslie St. and Lawrence Ave. East.
